Dunes & Beach
Camel ride in Essaouira: slow travel, Atlantic edition
An hour on a dromedary along the dunes of Diabat, the ocean on one side and the argan forest on the other: it's the Morocco postcard, ten minutes from your riad. On the beach it's sold at improvised prices — here the range is published, the tea stop is included, and your price is locked before you climb on.

How it works, straight talk
Rides leave from Diabat throughout the day, but the slot that matters is sunset: the light turns the dunes orange and the temperature drops. The 1h ride covers beach and forest; the 2h sunset version adds the dune ridge and a mint-tea stop with the cameleers.
Dromedaries are calm and led by experienced handlers — no experience needed, and children ride with a parent or on a led animal. A scarf against the wind and long trousers make the experience much more comfortable.

Frequently asked questions
Is riding a camel uncomfortable?
The first two minutes feel strange, then the swaying rhythm is genuinely relaxing. Dromedaries have padded saddles; long trousers avoid rubbing. Handlers adjust the pace to the group.
Is it ethical? Are the animals well treated?
We work only with Diabat families whose animals we know: they work limited hours, rest at midday in summer and are vet-checked. If you ever see something wrong on a ride booked through us, tell us — it ends the partnership.
What's the best time of day?
Sunset, without competition: softer light, cooler air, better photos. In summer we only run morning and late-afternoon slots to protect the animals from the heat.
Can small children join?
Yes — from 3 years riding with a parent, or on a led dromedary with a handler walking alongside.
