Argan valley tour: the oil, the goats in the trees and the real cooperatives
Between Essaouira and the Atlas grows the only argan forest on Earth — UNESCO-protected, with its famous tree-climbing goats. The valley is full of tourist-shop 'cooperatives'; we take you to real women's cooperatives where you see the oil pressed by hand and your money stays in the valley. Ranges below include transport and tastings.

How it works, straight talk
The half-day (30–45€) leaves Essaouira in the morning: photo stops at the goat trees, a guided visit of a women's cooperative (cracking, grinding, pressing — all by hand), tasting of culinary argan oil, amlou and honey, and a Berber tea. You're back for lunch.
The full-day version (55–70€) continues into the valley: a Berber village, the weekly souk (on market days) and a home-cooked lunch with a local family. It's the relaxed way to see the Moroccan countryside without a long drive — the valley starts 20 minutes from town.

Frequently asked questions
Are the goats in the trees real?
Yes — argan fruit is irresistible to goats, and they climb the trees to eat it. On the road into the valley you'll almost always see them. We stop where the animals are genuinely grazing, not at staged photo spots.
How do I know the cooperative is real?
A real cooperative has women working on site — cracking nuts with stones, grinding with the rotary mill. You'll see the whole process and can ask questions through the guide. The oil is sold at source, with no obligation to buy.
Is argan oil cheaper at the cooperative?
Usually yes, 20–40% less than medina shops for the same quality — and it's certified origin. But there is zero pressure: the visit is included whether you buy or not.
How long is the drive?
The valley starts 20 minutes from Essaouira; the furthest stop on the full-day tour is about an hour. Easy roads, air-conditioned vehicle.
